Solar + Battery vs Battery Alone in 2026

Short answer: Battery alone works. Solar helps it last longer in an outage by recharging it, but it is not a requirement — and it is not free money on top of the battery maths.

2026 rule, read first: $0 federal credit for a homeowner-owned battery installed in 2026. The 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit (§25D) does not apply to homeowner expenditures made after 31 December 2025 (Public Law 119-21 §70506; IRS Fact Sheet FS-2025-05, via The Solar Book). The expenditure counts when installation is completed, not when it was paid for. Lease / PPA treatment under §48E is different and depends on the contract price. This is not tax advice — re-check before publishing or acting.

Planning estimate only — not a quote, not tax advice, not installation advice. Get a site-specific quote from a licensed installer, check your utility's rules, and speak to a tax professional before buying.

So which one? Start with what you actually want the battery for. If the main goal is keeping the lights on in an outage and the roof, the shading, or the budget rules solar out, battery alone is a real option — not a compromise you have to apologise for. Solar + battery pulls ahead where solar can genuinely recharge the battery during an outage, and where export compensation makes daytime solar valuable. Both of those depend on your utility, not on a national claim.

What this site does not calculate for you

Use the size calculator for battery size in both cases, then the cost calculator for battery cost alone. Solar cost, solar production, and solar export value are not calculated on this site — get those from a solar installer quote for your roof, with production assumptions stated in writing. Do not add a solar saving to a battery payback figure from this site without that separate, dated solar quote.

Battery-only quote note: the research notes that EnergySage-style marketplaces mainly offer battery quotes for new solar + battery, with battery-only shoppers routed to an advisor consultation in some cases. A battery-only page must say that honestly if it ever links to such a funnel — and this site has no live affiliate link yet (see Affiliate Disclosure).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need solar to benefit from a battery?

No. A battery alone provides outage backup and peak-rate shifting. Solar adds recharging during outages and daytime generation, but it is not required.

Is solar + battery cheaper per kWh in 2026?

That depends on your solar quote, roof, export rules, and any confirmed programme payment. Compare the full solar + battery quote against the battery-alone quote for the same backup scope — do not compare a solar + battery total against a battery-only total without stating what is included.
