US Home Battery Backup

Home Battery for EV Owners

Short answer: Leave the EV out of backup unless you sized for it. Otherwise charge it off-peak from the grid — a battery drained by a car is no backup at all.

Planning estimate only — not a quote, not tax advice, not installation advice. Get a site-specific quote from a licensed installer, check your utility's rules, and speak to a tax professional before buying.

Here is the trap. An EV is not just another appliance — it is a very large load. Let it drink from the battery during an outage and your backup is gone fast. Charge it from the grid at peak rates and you can wipe out the bill-shifting saving you bought the battery for. So plan the car separately, on purpose, from the fridge, lights, and internet you actually need to keep on.

What the charger numbers actually say

The research reports give, for home EV-charger installation (not battery installation): Level 2 installation typically $1,200–$2,500, with a 100A→200A panel upgrade adding $1,500–$4,000 where needed, and the federal 30C credit for chargers ended for property placed in service after 30 June 2026 (low-competition report §2.10). Those are charger figures, not battery figures — do not use them as a battery price. Check your own electrician quote for charger + panel work, and your battery quote separately.

Four calls to make before you size anything

  1. Decide first: is the EV part of backup, or excluded from backup? If excluded, the battery size maths in the size calculator should not include EV daily use.
  2. If the EV is included, size for its daily use separately — an EV can use more in a day than a whole home's essential loads.
  3. Check panel capacity for battery + charger together — see panel upgrades and get a licensed electrician's load calculation.
  4. Compare: charging the EV off-peak from the grid vs discharging the battery at peak — the battery only helps if peak rates, programme rules, and backup needs all line up, on your own bill.

Frequently asked questions

Should I charge my EV from my home battery?

Only if you have planned for it in size and panel capacity. Otherwise, exclude the EV from backup scope and charge it off-peak from the grid.

Does a battery + EV charger need a panel upgrade?

Often it is the combination that triggers it. Get a load calculation from a licensed electrician — do not guess from website figures.
